Shared Tour: Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum and Memorial Guided Tour from Krakow
This is the best-known of the Nazi camps, once used as a center for genocide, now a memorial to the millions of victims who suffered and died there. Started in 1940 as a concentration camp for Polish political prisoners, Auschwitz became the center of extermination of European Jews in 1942. During the years 1940-1945, the Nazis killed around 1,500,000 people here, mainly Jews, but also members of other nationalities. Tour begins with a 15-minute
documentary film about the liberation of the camp. Soon after, a museum-guide shows the exhibitions in some of the surviving prison blocks, the gas chamber and the crematorium. After a short break, tour continues to Birkenau, where the
group goes up the watchtower above the entrance gate to see the view of the largest of all Nazi extermination camps.
