Munich immediately conjures up images of the annual Oktoberfest, a world-renowned festival of beer, music, and Bavarian culture. Although beer halls, including the historic 16th-century Hofbräuhaus and modern open-air beer gardens, are commonplace, the capital of Bavaria, straddling the Isar River in southern Germany, offers much more. The city is a treasure trove of cultural and historical attractions, with contemporary art quarters, automotive and comedy museums, and some of the world’s best science and technology collections housed in heritage buildings. Wander through bronzed cobblestone alleys and explore converted air-raid bunkers that tell tales of the past. Marienplatz, the central city square, takes visitors back in time with its gothic revival architecture and the famous glockenspiel clock in the dramatic façade of the New Town Hall. The royal palaces of German monarchs, centuries-old churches, and expansive botanical parks add an air of elegance to Munich’s urban landscape. Munich is also a sports hub, delighting soccer fans with the Allianz Arena, home ground of FC Bayern. The stadium's unique architecture and electric atmosphere make it a must-visit. For a serene escape, the English Garden, one of the largest urban parks in the world, offers picturesque landscapes and peaceful walking trails. Munich’s blend of rich history, vibrant culture, and modern attractions make it a captivating destination for any traveler. Whether it's sipping a beer in a historic hall or exploring a cutting-edge museum, Munich promises an unforgettable experience.

After gaining independence from the Bavarian (German) Wittelsbach dynasty in the late 14th century, Salzburg was actually an independent state in the Holy Roman Empire (and run by Prince Archbishops) until it officially became part of Austria in the beginning of the 19th century. While Salzburg was heavily bombed in World War II, much of the fantastic baroque architecture found in its Old Town was not destroyed. As a result, Salzburg's Old Town is quite a rare example of an authentic, Austrian alpine city. Its entire historic area is an official UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition to its architecture, Salzburg today is known for scenic surroundings (many of which were featured in The Sound of Music) and wonderful music festivals, many of which pay homage to Salzburg's most famous son: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
